Near by is the city of Boca del Rio, the name for the Rio Banderas. The name taken from the Spanish because the native people of this land waved white flags at the Spanish, thinking they were envoys of Quetzalcoatl. Boca del Rio was established by the Dominican Bisop Alonzo de la Mata y Escobar in 1609. The area is located on the left bank of the head of the river Jamapa. The area became a city on 24 JAN 1988.
