Being a child of the 'fifties, I used to stay up, quietly mind you, and listen to American Airline's--Bob Hall's Music 'Til Dawn on WCBS New York. I'm wondering do you know of anywhere where more information on this greatly missed program and D J might be available? I see that other cities had there own "Music 'Til Dawn" programs sponsored by "AA". I can only tell you that I still miss that quiet voice in the late evening introducing some excellent music. Many were the nights I fell asleep listening to that music when I should have been already asleep! "That's All!" Same theme? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. GTH, Virginia

American Airlines ran their "Music til Dawn" program on all of the 50,000 watt AM stations in towns served by their airline.

Probably the most famous of the hosts was Hugh Lampman on KRLD, Dallas, the home base for American. I am convinced he was the one who invented the program.

You are correct that at anytime the mike was open, "That's All" would be playing in the background.

Hugh Lampman recently passed away from kidney failure.

I was the Music 'til Dawn host in New Orleans for a brief period while I was attending Tulane. (1958) It is my recollection that we all got the same sequential play list so that all of the programs would run the same tunes at the same time and in the same order.

Our studio for the program in New Orleans was a show window in a furniture store on Royal Street. I wore a red tux jacket, black bow tie and formal shirt, and watched the drunks and partiers as the stumbled into the night. I was told to use the name, Hugh Lampman. I didn't know there was a real Hugh Lampman in Dallas. When I heard the real Hugh Lampman for the first time, I was embarrassed to have walked in his shoes (sort of).

An added note. Hugh Lampman, 69, died 2 years ago from diabetes complications. What's interesting is that you'll find many references to him on the Internet, but there don't seem to be any photographs of him.

Further, he was an extremely public figure in the Dallas area, so I find this whole thing totally incongruous. He remains to most of us, therefore, the man we see in our imaginations and that's where, I guess, he'll remain.

Ah. Takes me so pleasantly back in time. I was in Arlington, Virginia and listened to the Washington, DC version of Music Til Dawn. Seems to me Don Boothman took over the announcing of it later in its run.

I'm trying to find the instrumental version of "That's All" that was used as the theme. If anyone can point me to a source, that'd be great.

Meanwhile, nice to find kindred spirits.

Virginia: In the early 50's I was the director of Music 'Til Dawn at WCBS for several years. I selected all the music and my program sheets were then sent to other CBS Radio stations where the format was duplicated. I worked with Bob Hall, the announcer, from midnight until 6:00 a.m. Bob was a great guy and did a marvelous job for American Airlines. Sad to report that he died of cancer as a young man.
