WNEW-AM, the long time Adult Standards station in NYC...is what I used to listen to in my college days. LIVE365's new EasyMusicRadio is somewhat a return to those days. Their are a few hours of middle of the road vocalists such as Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat Cole, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and standards singers but most of the programming is quiet Nelson Riddle, Gleason strings, Kostelanitz etc. Memorable and not distracting. I was wondering if any of you could provide any information on
the status of the old WNEW AM radio station that broadcasted
the disc jockey William B. Williams. I read that it went off the air
in 1992. Were its broadcast rights or recordings transferred to
another station?

For a while the 1560kc frequency of WQXR-AM took on the WNEW Middle of the
road music format.
In the early '90s, the New York Times felt that FM was so common
nowadays as to eliminate the need for duplicate programming on AM and FM, so
they changed the format of WQXR-AM to "Swing and Big Band." This was
done very tastefully, and "WQEW" (borrowing the "EW" from the old WNEW)
became a well-listened-to, unique, and respected station. One could
forgive the Times for converting their +50-year-old classical station, as
WQXR-FM still continued as "The Classical Station of the New York
Times."
