Salonen - who is Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic - has established himself in the forefront of highly respected composers of today, modern and dynamic. Born in Helsinki, Finland in 1958, he made his conducting debut with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1979; he has been one of the world's most sought-after conductors since his debut in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra in September 1983.
Three compositions are included on this recording: Foreign Bodies and Insomnia - both very physical in _expression, highly charged, virtuosic works; and Wing on Wing. This is Salonen's most recent orchestral composition, written for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. With its great washes of sound it has an impressionistic texture - yet the same love of extreme registers and use of startlingly brilliant orchestration found in all Salonen's works gives it his unmistakable stamp
